Mudra loan rejected? What to do next
A Mudra loan is not an automatic right. The bank still checks whether your business can repay. If your application was turned down, or the branch keeps saying "come next week", here is how to find out why, fix it and apply again – at the same bank or somewhere else.

The 7 most common reasons
- Low CIBIL score or a recent default, even on a credit card or phone EMI
- No proper project report – a one-page request does not tell the bank how you will repay
- Branch outside your area – many branches lend only within their service area
- Too many loan enquiries in the last few months
- Cash business with nothing in the bank – no statement showing sales
- Activity not covered – Mudra is for income-generating business, not personal needs or pure farming
- Missing papers – Udyam registration, KYC, quotations for machines, rent agreement
Step by step after a rejection
- Ask for the reason in writing. Banks are expected to tell you why a loan to a micro or small unit was refused. A written reason tells you exactly what to fix.
- Fix the gap. Get a proper project report, clear small dues on your credit report, route sales through your bank account for 6 months.
- Escalate if the branch is stalling. Write to the bank's regional office or grievance cell. If there is no reply in 30 days, or you are not happy with it, file on the RBI complaint portal at cms.rbi.org.in.
- Apply on JanSamarth. The government portal jansamarth.in sends your application to banks online and lets you track it.
- Try another lender. Public sector banks, private banks, small finance banks, NBFCs and MFIs all lend under Mudra.
Mudra loan limits in 2026
| Category | Loan amount |
|---|---|
| Shishu | Up to ₹50,000 |
| Kishore | ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh |
| Tarun | ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh |
| Tarun Plus (only after repaying a Tarun loan) | ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh |
Mudra loans need no collateral. If you need more than Mudra gives, a bank loan backed by CGTMSE can go much higher without property.
Common questions
Can I apply for a Mudra loan again after a rejection?
Yes. There is no waiting period. Fix the reason first, otherwise a second refusal and another credit enquiry only make things harder.
Can the bank ask for collateral on a Mudra loan?
No. Mudra loans are covered by a government guarantee and do not need collateral or a third-party guarantee.
Where do I complain if the bank is not responding?
First the branch manager, then the bank's regional office or grievance cell. If there is no proper reply within 30 days, complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Which lenders give Mudra loans?
Public sector banks, private banks, regional rural banks, small finance banks, NBFCs and microfinance institutions. Funding Desk shows which of them fit your numbers.
